When to Replace It
I don't know about you, but sometimes my clients (and myself actually) get stuck between keeping something a little longer or knowing that it's past its prime, shall we say. I did a little research and found some cool things that I, for one, was happy to know. Not sure
Put Those Things Away!
After my last column on Teaching Our Children, which was based around learning to do laundry, the next logical subject seemed to be organizing skills of a more general nature. With all the toys, clothing, and school items that young ones are surrounded with daily, these young years are a
Keeping Schoolwork in Order
My last column discussed teaching order by having young children learn to organize their toys and rooms. This time we go to the next step of keeping track of schoolwork and the accompanying papers. This can turn into a lifelong concern, as "papers" seem to plague the world and challenge
The Joys of Cooking
Learning our way around a kitchen is a necessary skill for basic survival, really. While no one needs to become a gourmet cook, learning basic cooking skills and proper nutrition is a valid use of one's time. This can begin at an early age. When my children were about 3
Jump-Start Spring After a Break
When Spring Break arrives, for many, everything else in life comes to a halt. We drop our normal routines. Our schedules become more relaxed, and not much may get done. And that's the way it should be. This goes along with the old saying, "Stop and smell the daisies."
Dear Colleges: Pay Attention to ADHD Students
Have you ever felt that you just could not get organized, keep your assignments straight, or turn your homework in on time? If this sounds like you, and you find yourself full of energy, but are unable to focus, you could be displaying several symptoms of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder
The Black Hole Memory – Understanding ADHD Behavior
There are times when ADHD behavior is difficult to understand and can be confusingnot only to the person experiencing the behavior, but to those around him. Case in point: I was coaching a high school student who had a very interesting, yet not unique experience with regard to forgetfulness. Now, forgetting is something that occurs quite often for adults and teens with ADHD – ironically the individual will often promise that they did indeed do something that never happened. Why would that be? Why, or better yet, how, does someone believe in their heart-of-hearts that they did something when they didn’t?
College You're Not In High School Anymore!
The transition to college can be a difficult one for most students entering a university for the first time. If you are moving away from home, that becomes even more of a challenge, as students are often under-prepared...not academically...but in life and time management.
Will the REAL cause of ADHD please Stand Up?
Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is becoming something of an epidemic ... or so some would think. Over the last few decades, the number of children in the U.S. diagnosed with this condition has risen sharply, with numbers peaking in 2011. About 5.2 million children ages three to 17 have been diagnosed, and this number continues to grow, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. ADHD is characterized primarilyby inattentiveness, impulsivity, and restlessness, making it hard for children with ADHD to focus in school. As a result, schoolwork suffers, as well as these children's interactions with their friends, since they are often unable to control their behavior. Scientists and doctors are still largely unsure of what causes this "difference" (as I like to refer to it as), but they have formulated several possibilities.
Parental Involvement is Critical in ADHD Behavioral Therapy Success
The Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder epidemic is nothing new to Americans. In fact, in the U.S., about 5% of children suffer from this disorder, and an ADHD diagnosis has been handed out to 5.2 million children between the ages of 13 and 17.
